Several months ago, I wrote a guest blog post for the Rome Georgia Office of Tourism.  We’re all looking for ways to teach our kids, get outside, and explore while maintaining distance, so I thought I’d share again with a link to the original post. Myrtle Hill Cemetery: A Walk Through Nature and History

Myrtle Hill Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Rome, Georgia, founded in 1857. It is the final resting place of over 20,000 people, including many notable figures from Georgia’s history, such as the founders of Rome, Civil War generals, and a First Lady of the United States.

In addition to its historical significance, Myrtle Hill is also a beautiful and serene place to visit. The cemetery is home to over 35 different species of trees, many of which are rare and not native to the Northwest Georgia area. The trees provide shade and beauty, and they also help to create a sense of peace and tranquility.

Visitors to Myrtle Hill can take a self-guided tree tour to learn more about the different species of trees and their significance. The tour map includes information about the trees’ common names, Latin names, and native ranges. It also includes interesting facts about some of the trees, such as the fact that the Angel Oak sculpture near the entrance to the cemetery is carved from a deceased oak tree.
