If you haven’t been to the ECO Center at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome, you are missing a Rome treasure. Though the hours are sparse (and they close sporadically for events and school showings), it’s worth a trip to see the wildlife Rome has to offer. They have a surprising amount of live and stuffed animals to view up close.
Your kids will enjoy the alligator, turtles (land and water…including a snapping turtle!), fish, frogs, snakes, and the occasional dog–which the employees bring from home. If you’re lucky enough to visit when Berry College volunteers are there, you can see them feed the animals (frozen mice!), and may even get a chance to pet a turtle!
Open: Tues-Friday from 1-4pm (closes if they are out educating the community)
Price: FREE (donations accepted)
Location: Ridge Ferry Park (To the right after driving in. Located in the upstairs of the boathouse.)
Time Spent: 20-30 minutes, but take some time to visit the treehouse, trail, eat at a picnic table, or let the kids play at the park once finished!
